We give you the keys to discover the different types of hats that exist so you can learn to recognize them and choose the ideal one for the occasion.

What types of hats are there?

The hat

The pamela is a type of wide-brimmed women's hat whose purpose was to protect from the sun's rays. The origin of the name dates back to the 18th century, as the resounding success of the novel 'Pamela or Virtue Rewarded' written by Samuel Richardson and published in 1740, made the name of the story's protagonist become enormously popular. At that time, the vast majority of women covered their heads (especially in summer) with wide-brimmed hats with the intention of protecting themselves from the sun's rays and it was very common to see them wearing them at all kinds of social events that took place outdoors (horse races, picnics in the countryside...).

Today it has become an essential female fashion accessory for the most elegant weddings, provided they are morning weddings and especially those held outdoors. Today, it is used as an elegant and sophisticated accessory to complement not only the look of the best-dressed guests but it has been the choice of many iconic brides from the 70s to the present day.

The sun hat can come in different sizes and styles, from the smallest ones with more discreet wings and simple decorations to the largest and most striking ones that are the star of the most impressive looks. They can also be made of different materials, with straw or raffia being the ones for the summer season and felt, silk or velvet being the ideal ones for winter weddings.

Always remember that this accessory is only allowed at morning weddings and never at night. It is becoming more and more versatile, as it can be decorated with a multitude of elements from feathers, flowers, ribbons or even bows. They can be in natural or very striking tones, and can be worn with half-up hair.

Boater

The boater is a type of wide-brimmed hat that became popular in the 19th century. Its origins date back to the time when it was used to protect the heads of sailors working on ships. Over time, the boater became a popular item in men's and women's fashion, especially in the 1920s. Today, it is an ideal accessory for summer events.

The boater is characterised by its straight brim and round, flat crown. It is generally made of straw, although other materials can also be found, and was originally decorated with a grosgrain ribbon. This type of hat is perfect for weddings or more casual events, such as those in the countryside, in the mountains or near the beach.

The boater is an accessory that can be combined with different styles, but it is perfect to complete a two-piece suit or blouse and trousers outfit. To give it a more festive touch, it can be combined with flowers, ribbons and other decorations that add volume and colour. If you have very long hair, we recommend a ponytail or a low bun, but if your hair is bob-style, wearing it loose is ideal.

Cloche

The cloché is a hat with a narrow brim and a round crown that became popular in the 1920s. Its name comes from the French word for "bell", referring to its characteristic shape. It became a popular and revolutionary element in women's fashion at a time when women began to seek greater freedom and comfort in their clothing and accessories. With a hemispherical crown, cylindrical body and minimal brim, its head-hugging design and narrow brim allowed women to move easily without worrying about their hat. Today, the cloché remains an accessory used in more casual looks in the autumn-winter season and also on special occasions. Normally made of felt or rabbit fur, it is perfect for winter weddings, and is an elegant way to complement the look with a 1920s style. This hat is suitable if you want to focus attention on your eyes, as it is a hat with a deep crown, but with a short brim that gives prominence to the eyes. As for hairstyle, the ideal is to sport a short Garcon-style mane that perfectly frames the face and a cloche hat.

Bowler hat

The bowler hat is a classic accessory that became popular in the mid-19th century in England. Initially used for the countryside and hunting, it was soon adopted by businessmen and professionals who established it as a symbol of the men's fashion of the time, until it finally fell into disuse at the end of the 1960s. Traditionally associated with the city of London, it has become an English cultural icon, along with the red telephone booth and double-decker buses. The bowler hat is also worn by indigenous women in the Altiplano region of Bolivia and is a very identifying element of their clothing. Today, the bowler hat is also used on special occasions, such as weddings and formal events, and its reinterpretation can give the most surreal touch of style to a guest's look. It is a hat with a short, curved brim that brings a lot of personality to the outfit. Its hard, round crown stands out when made in bright colours and is combined with contrasting details to play with a circus-like and daring image. Wearing it with a low bun or a very polished ponytail is our best suggestion if you use this type of hat.

Top hat

The top hat is a formal hat that originated in the 18th century. It was designed to be worn at formal events and became the hat of choice for high society. The top hat is known for its high crown and narrow, stiff brim. Today, the top hat is rarely seen outside of formal events, such as weddings or horse races.

It is an essential accessory for men attending Ascot, and a fun design in its reinterpretation for wedding guests .

Cordoban Hat:

The sombrero cordobés is a type of hat originating from the city of Córdoba, in Andalusia, Spain. It is a wide-brimmed, high-crowned hat, traditionally made of braided straw. This type of hat has been part of Andalusian culture for centuries and has been worn by both men and women.

The Cordoban hat became popular in the 19th century as a fashion accessory for wealthy people in Spain and became known as the "gentlemen's hat." During the time of the April Fair in Seville, the Cordoban hat became an essential element of the Andalusian men's attire, who wore it to look elegant and attractive.

Over time, the Cordoban hat became a symbol of Spanish culture and began to be used by bullfighters and flamenco dancers, who considered it an indispensable element of their clothing. Today, the Cordoban hat remains a popular element in Spanish fashion, although in its modern version it has evolved in shapes, materials and colors.

In short, the Cordoban hat is an important piece of Andalusian culture and has gone from being a fashionable item for gentlemen to becoming an iconic symbol of Spanish culture.

Fedora:

The Fedora hat originated in the 1880s and was originally designed for women. However, in the 1920s, men began wearing the hat as part of their everyday attire. The hat became popular thanks to the fashion trend in cinema and was seen in many classic films. The Fedora hat is known for its wide brim and pleated crown and has been worn by many famous celebrities making it a trendy accessory.

Borsalino:

The Borsalino hat was created by brothers Giuseppe and Lazzaro Borsalino in 1857 in Italy. The hat became popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and was seen as a symbol of elegance and sophistication. This hat is known for its round crown and wide brim. Today, the Borsalino hat remains a fashion symbol and is popular all over the world.

Panama:

Despite its name, the Panama hat actually originated in Ecuador in the 17th century. The hat became popular during the construction of the Panama Canal in the 19th century, when workers wore the hat to protect themselves from the sun. The Panama hat is known for its straw weave and wide brim. Today, the Panama hat remains popular as a summer hat for both men and women.

And not all of them are here... but they are the most representative and iconic types of hats that exist. As you will see, there are many and very varied.

When choosing the most suitable hat, you must always take into account the type of ceremony, season and character you want to portray.

Each one brings a message and intention, which must be handled with style to create iconic looks, and to be able to sing that... Take your hat and put it on.
